Her Story
One Name. Two Counties Endless Potential
Barbara was born in and grew up in McLennan County where she attended Mart Schools from K-12. She continued her post high school first two-year studies at MCC. After a few years abroad and traveling she began her career as an educator with the Head Start Program. There she worked with the children in Mart until she retired. She believed that education was the ultimate bridge to a better life.
Throughout her journey, Barbara didn't just walk her own path; she spent her time building ways for others to get where they were going. Whether it was through a kind word, a helping hand, or her unwavering belief in the people of the community that she loved so sincerely; she was constantly "bridging" the gap between where someone was and where they dreamed of being.
For many, the road between McLennan and Limestone is just a twenty-mile stretch of Texas highway. But to those of us who live here, it is more than that—it is a path of shared history, deep-rooted rivalry, boundless ambition and hope!
The Barbara Ann Horton Scholarship™ evolved from the Medlock Memorial Scholarship after her death in 2018. The Scholarship awards $1000.00 to a graduating student of Mart and Mexia High Schools in Central Texas annually. This Scholarship ensures her legacy continues by easing the financial burden for students in the two counties that they call home, Barbara believed in the power of community.
